There is no doubt while years after and 3 sequels later, we have a remaster of the one that started it all. It was filled with fantastic third person gameplay and world filled with dread. GA: Its a little hard to believe that its been 9 years since the Gears of War franchise launched on Xbox 360 with the release of the first Gears of War from developer Epic Games. But here we are, 4 games later, and looking at a modernized version of the first game redeveloped by The Coalition, the new gatekeepers of the Gears franchise for Microsoft. Releasing for Xbox One this week, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition sports some spruced up graphics, with a much steadier framerate on both the single and multiplayer sides of the fence. Is it a pretty clear step up from the original? Yeah, I think so. Will it blow you away in a manner that other remakes and HD ports havent? Probably not.

HD: 'Gears of War' is a seminal Xbox 360 title from 2006, and it led to a series of popular third-person shooters, all published by Microsoft (as well as some imitators). In January 2014, Microsoft purchased the IP and tasked their new studio, The Coalition, with remastering the first 'Gears', with additional work being conducted by British indie dev Splash Damage. Rod Fergusson, producer of the original game, is currently employed at The Coalition and continues to oversee the franchise.

Changes in general are welcome and well-executed, though some unkempt issues of the original and some compression artifacts do arise here and there. Some technical issues aside, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is an excellent ode to the original which along with backwards compatibility for the sequels will make for an excellent opportunity for new players to introduce themselves to the franchise, along with returning players who want to re-live this classic Xbox 360 title."
